
Glossary of Terms
This glossary is not intended to be exhaustive, includes but is not limited to the following terms:
- Approved Auditor. An auditor recognized by the FSC under the Securities Industry Act (SIA).
- Asset. Any tangible or intangible resource owned that could generate a return in the form of more assets.
- Broker. A person or company that engages in transactions between buyers and sellers in exchange for a commission or fee.
- Complaint. Statement of an experience that is unsatisfactory or unacceptable.
- Fund. A crime that that results in a person losing money or property through deceptive and misleading information or illegal practices.
- Fraud. A pool of money from a group of investors to buy securities.
- IFRS. The International Financial Reporting Standards issued by the International Accounting Standards Board.
- Invest. To engage in any activity in which funds/money is used to purchase a service or product in exchange for financial gain.
- Investigation. The process of formally and thoroughly examining or researching a person, company or thing to discover the facts about a situation or experience.
- Market Price. The cost to buy or sell an asset or service.
- Municipal Securities. Includes Municipal Bonds, Municipal Notes and Municipal Paper.
- Portfolio. A collection of investments/securities owned by a company or individual.
- Prospectus. A notice, circular, advertisement or document inviting applications or offers to subscribe for or purchase securities, or offering any securities for subscription or purchase, in connection with a distribution.
- The level or degree of uncertainty about the financial gain that you as an investor would earn from an investment. This means that there is a possibility that you as an investor may incur a loss from an investment.
- Securities. An investment instrument that has financial value that can be used for a financial gain.
- These include shares; Instruments creating or acknowledging indebtedness; Instruments giving entitlements to securities; Certificates representing certain securities; Options; Futures; Contracts for differences but the underlying asset cannot be cryptocurrencies; Rights and Interests in Securities; and Foreign Exchange Contracts.
- Securities Representative. An individual carrying out any securities activity who is a representative of a registered company in a capacity other than Chief Executive Officer or Compliance Officer.
