The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is hosting the National Workshop for Maritime Administrators in Belize from February 24–28, 2025. This five-day event is being held under the IMO Member State Audit Scheme (IMSAS) and is bringing together key stakeholders to enhance Belize’s compliance with international maritime obligations.
Monday, February 24th – Director General & Registrar of Merchant Shipping, Ms. Claude Haylock, delivered the opening address, emphasizing the importance of maritime safety, security, and environmental protection. He highlighted the significant role of the IMMARBE Act, which strengthens Belize’s maritime governance and aligns national policies with international obligations. In his remarks, he:
- Welcomed the IMO representatives, acknowledging their invaluable support and expertise.
- Congratulated Mr. Paul Gersok, the newly appointed Managing Director of IMMARBE, who brings vast international experience in maritime operations and regulatory compliance.
- Reflected on Belize’s progress, particularly following the pre-audit conducted in September 2024, which provided key insights for the upcoming IMSAS audit in November 2025.
- Encouraged collaboration and active participation, stressing that the workshop serves as an opportunity for tangible progress in preparing for the audit.
This workshop is designed to enhance the understanding of the IMSAS audit framework and foster inter-agency collaboration. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
✅ Strengthen their knowledge of IMO audit requirements.
✅ Develop action plans for addressing identified gaps.
✅ Engage in practical exercises to improve regulatory alignment.
✅ Discuss the role of women in maritime under the IMO’s 2024 theme: “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community.”

With the upcoming IMSAS audit in November 2025, this workshop marks a crucial milestone in ensuring Belize remains a trusted and respected player in the global maritime industry.
